As a temporary measure, Josephs orders the link to NOW deactivated while the issue is considered at greater length. The Faculty Senate issues a resolution calling for the link to be reinstated, but the University Legal Counsel declares oversight of the Women’s Center to be an administrative, not academic, function. Spurred by the controversy, a University Marketing Committee develops a new policy for all university websites and recommends that the NOW link be moved to the Women’s Studies Department website, along with a disclaimer from the University. Josephs accepts this recommendation, though considers it an imperfect compromise and expects the issue to emerge again in the future.

Subjects: Mission, Academic Freedom, Leadership Alumni Relations
