After two decades of unprecedented growth and development, the future appears bright for UMBC. The completion of two successful capital campaigns, improvements in faculty quality and research activity, growth of the physical plant, and an increasing number of vibrant university/corporate partnerships result in institutional improvements that garner national attention. In 2010, the
U.S. News & World Report recognized UMBC as the #1 “Up-and- Coming University” in the United States. This case study highlights the role and contribution of institutional strategic planning, the leadership of President Freeman Hrabowski and his senior-level administrative “dream team,” and the impact of a robust institutional advancement function on UMBC’s institutional success. If used in conjunction with two earlier case studies (Institutional Advancement at the University of Maryland Baltimore County A and B), more than a decade of institutional activity, growth, transformation, and success can documented, discussed, and analyzed.
