    The Design of Spelling

    Valerie Yule
    The importance and timeliness of systematic changes in the spelling of English are discussed, and the wide range of learning needs of language users as well as the traditional assumptions which account for the resistance to spelling change are considered. Areas for research into spelling in the English language are proposed.
