Kathleen Mayse

Reflecting on her experiences as a teacher in Texas, Kathleen Mayse critiques the context of a super-testing culture and makes an appeal to President Obama to lead us in a new educational direction. She argues for an approach that embraces and utilizes the knowledge of the real experts in the field—teachers—and recognizes the importance of the relationships teachers build with their students. Through understanding the practices of master teachers, she tells us, we might learn how to actually leave no child behind.

Kathleen Mayse is a journalism teacher and publications adviser at Westfield High. The school’s student-produced newspaper, The Pony Express, may be seen online at www.whsponyexpress.com. She has been teaching in Texas public schools since 1989. Before teaching, Mayse was an award-winning journalist for the Texas City Daily Sun and served as editor of the League City News, Dickinson News, and Bayside News.
