Adolescent Literacy: Translating Research into Effective Policy and Practice
Askwith Forum at Harvard Graduate School of Education
Askwith Lecture Hall, Longfellow Hall
Wednesday April 9, 2008
5:30 pm-7:00 pm, 5:00 pm Public Reception
At this forum, discussion will center on the problem of struggling adolescent readers, which in recent years has been identified as a "crisis" in the U.S. education system, drawing increasing interest from researchers and policymakers. We aim to place the adolescent literacy crisis in a historical context and discuss new research about effective literacy instruction for students beyond the primary grades. Also, we hope to talk about the challenges faced by state-level policymakers, school administrators, and content-area teachers as they make use of new research about how to increase adolescents' literacy skills. Speakers will include: Ardice Hartry, senior research associate, MPR Associates; Timothy Shanahan, director of the Center for Literacy, University of Illinois at Chicago; and Catherine Snow, Henry Lee Shattuck Professor of Education, HGSE. Vicki Jacobs, lecturer on education at HGSE, will moderate.
This forum is being held in collaboration with the Harvard Educational Review.
For information, contact Shawn Wade Tuttle at tuttlesh@gse.harvard.edu.
All Askwith Education Forums are free and open to the general public. Tickets are not necessary, unless otherwise noted. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
