    Just an Object
    Eloise Ackman

As the last raindrop falls I think…
How far this country has come
What an impact America has made on the world
    How lucky I am
    Not to be treated differently
To be looked at as a human
    Not an animal
To only work for whom I choose
To have the freedom to do what I please

But what if it was different?
What if my life wasn’t like that?
What if I was treated as an animal?
If I was just something that could be sold
    An item in somebody’s life
    Not a human
    Not someone with feelings
    Just an object

Barack Obama becoming president means a lot
Not just to people who look like him
    But to everyone
It shows that we have not just said we would change the world
    We have done it
    43 presidents
    Walked through that door
    Some did amazing things
    Some did not
But either way they all have something in common
They all care for our country
The amazing place we have created
The country where the streets are paved with gold

    The brain is complex
    Always looking for new information
    To sort through
But where does all this information come from?
    Parents
    Family
    Friends
    Most comes from good education
    That comes from schools
What rules do you think of when it comes to schools?
Mostly don’t run in the hallway
    And things of that nature
But other rules that you don’t even think of now were there
    Dark skin not allowed
Not allowed to be taught because of your race
    Things of this sort
    Currently these don’t come up

We think all of this has changed
It has to a great degree
But there is still some left
    Which people think Barack Obama
    Can change
    Which he has already
    He not only brings intelligence
    To the office
    But the hope of equality
    The hope of peace

    As I sit here
All that is left of the past is a puddle
    Just waiting to dry away
