About the Authors

Mandy Savitz-Romer is a senior lecturer and faculty director of the Prevention Science and Practice program at Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is a leading expert on the topic of school counseling and college and career readiness. Before joining the Harvard Graduate School of Education faculty, Savitz-Romer was the associate director of the Boston Higher Education Partnership, where she led research, policy, and programmatic initiatives focused on promoting college access, readiness, and support for Boston Public School students. As a former urban school counselor, Savitz-Romer writes and speaks extensively on how school and nonprofit organizations can structure college and career readiness supports that reach all students. She has taught at Boston University and managed various enrichment/readiness programs for middle school, high school, and first-year college students.

Suzanne M. Bouffard is a researcher and writer with a background in psychology and a passion for making research accessible. Her work has focused on social and emotional learning, college access and success, parenting and family-school relationships, and out-of-school time and youth development. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, Parents,, Educational Leadership, Harvard Education Letter, Social Policy Report, Phi Delta Kappan, and other publications. In 2013, she won a story fund grant from the Solutions Journalism Network to cover social and emotional learning.  She has also conducted numerous workshops and trainings for educators. She has taught at Boston University and Emerson College, and has worked directly with children and youth from elementary school through college. She holds a BA from Wesleyan University and a PhD in developmental psychology from Duke University, where she was a University Scholar.
